Kit List

🧭 Essential Kit – All Days

These items should always be carried, regardless of the weather:

  • Rucksack (20–35L) with rain cover
  • Waterproof jacket (with hood, breathable)
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Insulating mid-layer (e.g. fleece or synthetic jacket)
  • Base layer (moisture-wicking, not cotton)
  • Walking trousers (no jeans)
  • Sturdy walking boots (with good grip and ankle support)
  • Hat and gloves
  • Map & compass (and ability to use them)
  • Whistle & emergency shelter (group shelter or bivvy bag)
  • First aid kit (including blister treatment)
  • Head torch (with spare batteries)
  • Food & snacks (more than you think you need)
  • Water (minimum 1.5–2 litres)
  • Mobile phone (charged, in a waterproof bag)
  • Watch (to keep track of time)

β˜€οΈ Warm Summer Day – Additional Items

  • Sunhat / cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen & lip balm (SPF 30+)
  • Extra water (or water filter/tablets if refilling)
  • Lightweight long-sleeve shirt (for sun protection)
  • Insect repellent

❄️ Cold Winter Day – Additional Items

  • Insulated jacket (down or synthetic)
  • Extra mid-layer (e.g. fleece or wool)
  • Thermal base layers (top and bottom)
  • Warm hat (that covers ears)
  • Thick gloves or mitts (and spares)
  • Neck gaiter / buff / balaclava
  • Gaiters (some trousers have gaiter-like features already)
  • Microspikes (optional, for light icy patches)
  • Hot drink in a flask

  • Walking poles
  • GPS device or smartphone with OS mapping (but don’t rely solely on it)
  • Camera
  • Sit mat or small foam pad
  • Notebook & pencil
  • Lightweight stove & brew kit (especially in winter)
  • Group rope and helmet (for scrambly or exposed terrain)
  • Personal locator beacon (PLB) or emergency communicator (in remote areas)
